If You Were...

If we meet no Gods, it is because we harbour none, said Emerson. For us, God is not a remote, abstract figure; He is a living, loving Presence.
Hindu Worship

Pritviraj

If you were to breathe life into that Greco-Roman statue on the mantelpiece or that manifestation of Rama on the altar, would it not look something like this?

Vinod

If I were to select one near perfect image of the young South Asian male physique, then this just might be it:

Pritviraj & Vinod
They are an incredible pair, but the image here is not what it may seem. It is nonetheless an incredibly artful and captivating image.

If I were...
If only I were...

If only I were the photographer responsible for these images, I would present them here even more enthusiastically.

Instead, I dutifully credit the author, LAURENT G, and his website DESIGNLDG BY LAURENT G, while meekly daring to display these images on Sri Lankan Male.

These heavenly images are out of India, at the river Ganga in Varanasi.

Now, there is the dilemma in being a blogger of whether or not to post the images of others. It is not so dissimilar from the MP3 debate and the older debate over photocopying.

Surely, it isn't fair that one makes use of the work of another's to earn profit, but what about the use of other's work in a form of artistic expression, where there is no material profit or false claims of ownership?

Creativity is stifled unless one is free to expand freely on the work of others.

For what it is worth, I sincerely hope to draw attention to the work and talents of the creator of these remarkable images, while at the same time expanding upon his work and opening it up to a new audience.

I humbly present these images for the Sri Lankan Male audience and encourage you to see more of the author's works through the links provided:

DESIGNLDG BY LAURENT G.

Believe me, you cannot but marvel at the images. YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM!

Whatever his day job--it is referred to on the site--LAURENT G ought instead consider his primary purpose in life to be a chronicler of what can only be described as splendid and magnificent India.

While the focus of interest here (on Sri Lankan Male) is the beauty of the male physique--and the images of LAURENT depicted here capture that so well in the images of these young Indian wrestlers--there is even more treasure than this to be found on LAURENT G's website.

Now, back to the artist's canvas...

The featured youths are wrestlers in the tradition referred to as pelwan and massage therapy forms a part of the discipline.

According to the author, a brief massage is an integral part of the daily routine of the wrestler and is related to the practice of ayurvedic healing.

Certainly, there is nothing more satisfying than a good daily massage by the hands of a loving comrade.

Images, especially artistic ones, speak to us. Is the wet, course fabric (below) not beautiful? What does this image of Pritviraj, with the knot of his smartly tied waist garment, communicate to you?

Take Me There!
Take me to a better place...

I believe the word Ganga itself means river, so the Ganga River as we would refer to it in English is perhaps more correctly thought of as the River.

Mr. Laurent G. explains the story behind this most incredible image. And OMG, this has to be an all time favorite image for me. The bathing Indian man is magnificent and makes a display that befits the legendary grandeur of the River.

Archanam Andpadasevanam
The worship and adoration of a God
...made visible to our eyes in beautiful images--like this one.

Wow! They are both such handsome men with beautifully fit bodies. I'd like to be in on their wrestling! Very sensual photos.

I love the one where the guy is looking up into the camera. His eyes are gorgeous.

B.D.: What is it that they're wearing? The only words I know for Indian men's clothes are dhoti and lunghi and I think they're both longer than what these guys are wearing.

The cloth encloses their genitals so intimately. It really accentuates them. I wonder what it feels like to have your penis and testicles covered so closely by cloth like that? It must feel pretty good.

I like how it really shows off their manly parts. It looks like their penis or balls could fall out at any moment.

Oh, and I think since you're not doing this for profit, it should be fine that you posted the guy's photos, especially since you've given credit. The guy's comments were interesting, especially about the last photo of the guy bathing next to the Ganges, like you said.

Thanks for posting these, B.D. They're great!

P.S.: I really like both their names. Pritviraj and Vinod. Very masculine and yet pretty, too.

I like Vindo's big ears.

Tom, funny you talk about their loincloths as just as you were posting your comment I was marveling about this garment, too. You are right, it isn't a lungi or dhoti, which are full length wrap arounds. I've never seen anything like it before worn openly in Sri Lanka or south India, except on elderly Sri Lankan farmers. However, those were briefer, exposing the buttocks as well, whereas these shown here seem to tie around the buttocks like full underwear while fitting so closely around the genitals in the front.

Wonder if any other reader can comment on whether this is commonly worn in northern or other parts of India. It reminds me too of the various head garments worn by men in the Middle East and south Asia which are tied in place so stylishly. Even the first and second to last images of the boy with the pink wrap around the waist are so attractive--it is such a simple garment but worn so nicely.

I hope the author of these photos, if he stumbles upon this blog, will also be satisfied with the credit I give him and links. In any event I think I'll have to contact him and order a print of that last image of the river bather. It's so incredible to have this great looking guy posing as he was in the golden sunlight.

B.D., I'd like to order a poster of the one where the guy in white langot is leaning over the guy in the red one. Or the one where the guys head is leaning backwards into the crotch of the one wearing the red langot.

Well, I found out it's called a "langot". I found the word deep within the "archive for pehlwan" section of LaurnetD's website.

Then I went into google, and typed the word in. Here's an example of what I found (this is from the first link that comes up):

"Well, my friend take heart there are many, not only in Tamilnadu, but also in Kerala, Karnataka and A.P, where Kovanam, or konakam, or langotti, is traditionally worn. The Kalaripayattu, the traditional form of Martial arts of kerala, insists on students to wear kovanam even now. When you wear langotti, it is drawn under your legs twice, thus your testicles are drawn up and tightly kept, thus it is possible to move your legs perpendicularly upwards and the efforts will be hardly felt by your testicles. It is not only effective, but also cost effective. It is again very durable and can be worn in any climate. No wonder the farmers of South India used it as the modern men use Bermuda."

However, other people in the post say the langot is bad for your testicles and sperm count. Respondents also seem to be saying that not as many people wear them anymore. Typical switching over to Western fare, I suppose.

I agree with you that it reminds me a little of the elaborate tying of the headresses that Indian men wear. It's almost like tying of garments is as much an art to them as picking out a great suit and getting it altered for a precise, crisp fit is for us. Although the look of a great suit is very stimulating, I bet the former is ultimately more satisfying because it involves more personal effort and mastery on the part of the wearer.

Anyway, do the search in Google for langot, and see what comes up. You'll find it interesting.

^^ You're speaking of the pic of Priviraj looking straight into the camera, right? I agree about its magic. Even though it is a dead on smile for a photo, it is as though he isn't looking into a camera at all, but innocently smiling to each of us.

yes, this is called langot. I am from varanasi, the place where these snaps are taken. Langots are must for a pehlwan(wrestler) in northern india. It's not very popular in big cities but you can frequently find people wearing langot in villages. Wearing a langot is an art. I learned it from wrestlers when i was in my teens. I still use them during morning workouts.

That sounds pretty HOT Vishu! Thank goodness for the survival of some aspects of traditional culture. Like the turbans worn by the Sikh, we also have the langot.

I hope to see it in the flesh one day and also to see the act/art of tying it.

Langot is worn by men all over India. Even now. It is a mustwhile excercising and is used instead of western supoorters while in gym. However, it can be worn thru out the day instead of underwears. The fact that it is of cotton and can be as tight/loose as one needs, it is most comfortable. Go to varanasi and you can find differnt colors/designs now.
