Muscle Dreams

Some young men dream to become bodybuilders and work towards that dream through hard training in a gym. Others, like me, can only admire their determination and dream only to get to know one such as them. That is humble enough a dream, is it not?

My muscle dream is a damp dream.

Can you remember the hottest bodybuilder you have ever seen--not in a photo but in the flesh? Funny, I cannot. One would think such a memory would linger. But I guess it gets jumbled up with the fantasy and the fantastical images of the beautiful bodybuilder one sees in pictures.

One thing I like about Sri Lankan bodybuilders is that they are not so huge that their body proportions begin to look unnatural.

All who reach this level of muscular definition are worthy of being idolized. >>

Most attractive is the physique that is both lean and muscular--with well-defined, chiseled features.

A dream assignment would be that of photographer, ringside at a Sri Lankan bodybuilders meet. If I could select my subjects I would choose those with that extra finesse--like the Adonis pictured here.

<< The bodybuilder: a timeless image of beauty in classic proportions.     (Click on artwork to view in full.)

I would capture the athlete at just the right angle to highlight a modestly bulging chest and the sinewy twists in his forearms and biceps.

When the champions emerge on stage there is a rustling sound in the room and a flurry of activity.

Photographers scramble, while spectators gawk and hoot in approval at the stunning male physiques that flex and bend before them.

Were I at ringside I would train my lens on the bodybuilder with the most lean and supple muscular physique.

Being that it is Sri Lanka I would also scout out those posers with the most delectable, glistening complexions, whether they be a smooth creamy caramel, a rich golden brown or a hard, bitter chocolate.

Chocolate, caramel or golden brown, the Sri Lankan complexion is the most delectable among Asians. >>

Picture in your mind's eye the perfect Sri Lankan male physique. How muscular or how lean is it, and what is your preferred confectionary?

In the West, the phrase tall, dark and handsome is used to identify the most choice male specimen, while in India the phrase fair & lovely is used to describe the choicest among women. I suppose complexion is only a superficial measure of beauty, but it is one which nevertheless has the power to seduce even the most unbiased among us.

Take a Bow

I've always been in love with you
I guess you've always known it's true
You took my love for granted, why oh why
The show is over, say good-bye.

Not my words, but maybe my thoughts... The idea here is to hear the words and melody as sung by Madonna, while you admire the images of the Sri Lankan bodybuilder.

In the video which accompanies the song, the images used to personify the lyrics are those of a Spanish bullfighter--handsome, exotic and seductive.

handsome, exotic and seductive
Make them laugh, it comes so easy
When you get to the part
Where you're breaking my heart
Hide behind your smile, all the world loves a clown

Wish you well, I cannot stay
You deserve an award for the role that you played
No more masquerade, you're one lonely star
[One lonely star and we don't know who you are]

Hmm... the man we idolize is mysterious, his identity concealed--even when his mask is removed. He is a star, no doubt, but the lyricist tells us he's lonely... and all the while, we say goodbye to that elusive idol whom we will never be able to call our own.

Only to Be Admired

The dream for me is to see, the dream for them (the bodybuilders) is to create.

Theirs is the greater challenge, so one must especially admire them for that. I have seen that some people disparage the bodybuilder by sneering at their freakish proportions, but it is clearly out of envy.

An ever so handsome physique is the envy of every male.

No doubt those who put them down have at one time tried to make their own body beautiful but failed. It is so much easier to shrug and dismiss those we envy by thinking, "Who wants to be a bodybuilder, anyway?"

Even as a big admirer, I know there are real concerns. The use, or perhaps overuse, of substances like steroids can be very harmful.

Good shape and style ought to be the bodybuilder's mantra above mass and size. >>

And as for the aesthetics, it would seem some bodybuilders do go to too great an extreme in building mass--probably with aid of far too many harmful drugs.

But this does not seem to be much the case among the Sri Lankan bodybuilders, who to my eyes, are nothing short of being body perfect.

If not their trimmer, leaner proportions, then it is the wonderful range of their skin complexions that make Sri Lankan bodybuilders stand out.

In The Spirit of Competition

Competitions spur rivalries and sometimes antagonistic behavior. But for the bodybuilder there is always some degree of admiration toward his fellow competitor, for he knows the effort it takes to reach the higher levels.

<< On stage the bodybuilder is luminous!

There has to be a bit of Narcissus in league with Adonis to bring these demi-gods to life on the stage.

In a recent international competition, one Sri Lankan bodybuilder was a medal-winner--a first for the nation. The powerful physique of this champion amazingly belongs to a man of over 40 years. He's built like a brick, and one can be sure that his bronze color is natural Sri Lankan.

Prasanna Peiris, recent silver medal winner in competition in the Gulf.

Brothers in the North

I would say that it is the bodybuilders of southern India who really raise the bar and set the standard for Sri Lankan bodybuilders to work toward.

They would seem to have both the numbers and organization required to create an exemplary representative sample. What's more, they share both physical and cultural attributes with their gentler Sri Lankan neighbors.
JKR Classic, Mr. Tamil Nadu Contest

The bodybuilders of Tamil Nadu are to me the superheroes of the bodybuilding world within the Indian subcontinent, which includes all of India's near neighbors, e.g. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the like. They have, it would seem, mastered the balance of high definition with modest mass.

The perfect symmetry of N. Mohamed Abdullah of Chennai--to be featured in an upcoming SLM post.
Like this older image of a classic young Sri Lankan bodybuilder, the Sri Lankan male physique, even that of a bodybuilder, is often of slighter build.

This gentler, while no less masculine form, often characterizes the allure of the Sri Lankan male.

50 Words (the Author's Aside)

OMG two Eids this year coming much too soon. Bangladeshis eat TOO MUCH MEAT! Several meals I had with several sets of friends, with big pots of stew, 95% mutton and too few other things.

Oh my... normally my Bangladeshi friends eat meat and rice almost every night. No vegetarians?

Theres something I just dont like about bodybuilders, I find it hard to pinpoint exactly what it is.Part of it is how extreme this pursuit of perfection goes because in the natural world men or women would never develop this excessive musculature.
Or perhaps its the idea that they seem to be somewhat narcussistic and revel in their own perceived beauty.
Ive seen many Srilankan men and women who have developed a very natural beauty which has been sculpted from their life and environment. For example my brotherinlaw who sports a perfect 8 pack, broad shoulders, narrow hips , pert buns and arm muscles that people spend thousands of dollars to develop in the gym.Yet he is shaped so purely because he is a fisherman.

^^ You have a point--especially with regard to how some people get built naturally. In my post I suggest some people are just envious... and I do believe this, but I also agree that what you say is probably also true to some extent.

On the other hand, there are so many things we as humans do to excess and that it seems a big part of what being human is.

For example, we could live in simple functional dwellings, but instead we have every extreme in architecture imaginable. It may not be at all "natural." But these things we create and mold, whether externally or of our own bodies is an important part of human achievement.

why dont you feature un-symetric men ?
Is it a sin to be un-symetric or
have a non stereotypical (rudely labeled-ugly)male form ?
everything born in the world is perfect.

This blog is unapologetically about good-looking men. Bodybuilders actually work at sculpting their bodies so I would say they deserve some of the extra attention they get from admirers. Still, I want in this blog to present an "alternative" form of beauty, and by that I mean the look of south Asian men which is often neglected.

If you look at media in countries like India, Bangladesh and even Sri Lanka those "beautiful" movie stars and models are all fair-skinned with light-colored eyes--the fair and lovely. But if you walk the streets of Chennai, Mumbai, Colombo, Dhaka, etc. you will see many, many more dark-skinned fellows. And you know how proud people are in south Asia if they or their child have fair "white" skin. So, in this blog I want to give due recognition to especially the beautiful, darker male and even the non-muscular regular looking guy one might see on the streets--who doesn't have light-colored eyes, or soft-feminine features as the typical models and Bollywood types have.

All this is to say that I am ready to feature ordinary-looking guys, but those who are still attractive in some way, but not in the Bollywood sort of way. If you ask me the Bollywood look represents about 10% of the south Asian population, whereas the beauty I seek to promote here represents 60-80% of the south Asian population. So, in that sense I feel I am doing a service to the regular population. No matter what, this site is going to be about physical appeal, but at least an alternative to the mainstream.

A man has natural ormones to develop muscle. With clever planning and discipline he can become his own "architect" in sculpting his physique. He will look better, feel great and perform fantastic because of his increased function ability. Any man who denies himself these added benefits has only himself to blame. A man can stay as he is or change with natural bodybuilding to a higher level of perception. Physical pleasure is much more intense due to the conditioned body. The nerves respond better and the experience of orgasm is more than the ordinary man could even imagine. This is just one but a very important and wonderful advantage. To look good promotes self esteem and confidence often mistaken as arrogance or self-love. To be able to do good to others, oneself must be well. The first thing people notice about others is the outward appearance. A well-conditioned body is more often than not an indication of a disciplined man who respects life and a partnership because hard training often required a good partner. To see, feel and experience a handsome, physically well-conditioned man is the ultimate reward for two or more compatible men and they deserve this fully.

^^ Thanks for your input. I think your words highlight the fact that body builders are due all respect and appreciation for what they achieve. Not only do they provide a handsome object to admire, but they also set a good example of what can be achieved with determination. Good on them... and as you say they also develop strong healthy libidos. But I suppose one essential element in all of this is for them to achieve their goal through good nutrition and exercise as opposed to chemical and other supplements.
